A forthcoming agreement with Clearlake Capital indicates a forthcoming change in Chelsea Football Club’s leadership, with a new chairman expected to replace Todd Boehly after his term concludes in 2027.

Following Clearlake Capital and the American co-owners’ acquisition of the club in 2022, it was established that the chairmanship could alternate between them every five years.

The Blues have opted to activate this provision promptly, scheduling the transition for the conclusion of the 2026–27 season.

Under the terms of the group’s takeover in 2022, Boehly assumed the role of the inaugural chairman despite holding only a minor stake in the company.

Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, controls 61.5% of the company, while Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss, and Mark Walter collectively own the remaining 38.5%.

A contractual clause stipulates that Boehly could potentially reclaim the chairmanship in 2032, at the conclusion of the subsequent five-year cycle.

He is slated for dismissal in 2027, indicating a shift in Clearlake Capital’s leadership strategy away from the American investor.

Reports suggest that Boehly’s group holds “common stock,” whereas Clearlake Capital’s principal shareholders possess “preferred stock,” affording them safeguards against financial instability.

As of now, no successor has been identified for the chairmanship. Eghbali, Feliciano, or an alternative candidate could assume the position.

Criticism from Simon Jordan directed at the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust highlights discontent regarding the club’s management under Boehly and Eghbali’s stewardship.

Despite ongoing collaboration between Boehly and Eghbali, with significant decisions requiring their joint approval, considerations for alternative leadership reflect a belief that Chelsea’s performance could be enhanced.

Boehly has faced mounting scrutiny from Chelsea supporters and the media, particularly due to his ownership stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Vocal dissatisfaction from fans, coupled with recent financial losses, has underscored concerns about the club’s direction under Boehly’s leadership.

Eghbali has maintained a lower profile but remains actively involved in the club’s daily operations

Chelsea’s current standing in the Premier League, combined with substantial financial losses, further underscores the need for strategic reassessment and potential leadership changes as the club seeks to navigate its future trajectory.
