Eden Hazard has subtly suggested a former teammate as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.
Despite believing that Pochettino had done a “fantastic job,” Hazard acknowledged the club’s decision to part ways with the Argentine coach after a turbulent season.
Last week, Chelsea announced that they and Pochettino had mutually agreed to part ways.
The season had been marred by inconsistent performances and numerous injuries, causing Chelsea to struggle in mid-table for much of the year.
However, a late surge of five consecutive victories lifted them to sixth place, securing a spot in European competition.
The split between Pochettino and Chelsea’s management reportedly stemmed from differing views on the future direction of the team.
Consequently, Chelsea is now in search of a new manager.
Initial speculation favored Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town, but Chelsea has reportedly narrowed their shortlist to Thomas Frank of Brentford and Enzo Maresca of Leicester City, with Roberto De Zerbi also under consideration.
Hazard, expressing his dismay at Pochettino’s departure, suggested that it could be an opportunity for Cesc Fabregas, a former Chelsea player and interim manager at Como, to take the helm.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Hazard said, “I was, to be frank, a bit upset. I believe he performed admirably.
Although it’s only a transitional season, I understand that many want Chelsea to finish in the top four.”
Hazard praised Pochettino, saying, “He’s a terrific manager. I wish him good success. Let’s see who will be next.”
When asked if De Zerbi would be a suitable replacement, Hazard hinted at his preference by saying, “Maybe. My friend can also be the first manager in Como,” with a wink, referring to Fabregas.
Fabregas, who played for Como before taking over as interim manager for five games at the end of the previous season, has since helped Osian Roberts lead the team to promotion to Serie A.
Fabregas recently visited Chelsea’s Cobham training facility, coinciding with Pochettino’s final days at the club.
He shared his experience on the BBC Sounds’ Planet Premier League podcast, mentioning that he had a friendly relationship with Pochettino from their playing days.
Recalling his visit, Fabregas said, “Ironically, I spent the weekend in London. I always thought Mauricio was a really nice guy, a gentleman, when we played against them.
Two days before the season ends, on Friday, I visited the training ground.
They had won four straight games, so everything seemed positive and upbeat ahead of the last game of the season.
I stopped by and he gave me a warm welcome. We talked football for an hour and a half in his office.”
Fabregas added, “I also spoke with some former teammates and people I know who work at the club.
It was a great visit, and to be honest, I didn’t have the impression that this would happen.
I was surprised by the decision because, just by looking around and observing the atmosphere, it seemed pleasant and easygoing.”
