Robert Lewandowski, the prolific Barcelona striker, has suffered a thigh injury just days before Poland’s Euro 2024 campaign is set to begin.
The injury occurred during Poland’s 2-1 win over Turkey in a friendly match on Monday night, forcing Lewandowski to be substituted after just 32 minutes.
While the severity of the injury is still unknown, Poland’s coach Michal Probierz is optimistic that Lewandowski will be fit in time for the tournament, stating that the injury is “slight” and “there should be no problem.”
Lewandowski’s injury is a significant concern for Poland, as he is the team’s star player and has been in excellent form this season, scoring 26 goals and providing nine assists in 49 appearances for Barcelona.
Poland is relying heavily on Lewandowski’s goalscoring prowess to propel them through the group stage and beyond.
Despite Lewandowski’s injury, Poland’s coach is confident that his team can still perform well in the tournament.
Poland is currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak, with five wins in that span.
They will face the Netherlands, Austria, and France in the group stage, and will be looking to advance to the knockout rounds for only the second time in their history.
Lewandowski’s injury is not the only concern for Poland, as fellow striker Karol Swiderski also suffered an injury during the friendly match against Turkey.
Swiderski sprained his ankle and was replaced by Krzysztof Piatek, but is expected to be fit for the tournament.
Poland’s chances of advancing in the tournament depend largely on Lewandowski’s fitness, as he is the team’s most experienced and clinical finisher.
If he is unable to play, Poland’s chances of success will be significantly diminished.
However, coach Michal Probierz is remaining optimistic, and is confident that Lewandowski will be ready to lead his team in their opening match against the Netherlands on Sunday.
