Owen Hargreaves remains optimistic about Manchester United’s potential to secure silverware in this season’s Europa League under the leadership of Erik ten Hag.
Despite a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League and an early exit from the Champions League last season, United finds itself competing in Europe’s second-tier competition once again.
The Red Devils have had success in the Europa League before, notably lifting the trophy in 2017 under José Mourinho.
However, their last attempt ended in frustration when they were eliminated by Sevilla in the quarter-finals two seasons ago.
Manchester United’s current season has started on shaky ground, with only two wins from their first five Premier League matches.
This slow start has prompted the team to shift their focus toward cup competitions, particularly the Europa League, as a way to find success.
Hargreaves believes Ten Hag is intent on adding another European title to his collection after winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in his short tenure.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Hargreaves analyzed United’s situation, noting that the team struggled in last season’s Champions League due to not being at the same level as Europe’s top clubs.
He suggested that the Europa League might be a better fit for the club’s current form, offering a more realistic path to silverware.
According to Hargreaves, winning the Europa League would not only bring a trophy but also strengthen Ten Hag’s standing at the club.
Hargreaves also reflected on how past defeats in big matches can affect a team’s morale, using Arsenal’s previous struggles against Bayern Munich as an example.
Nevertheless, he views United as strong contenders for the Europa League this year, particularly given the quality within the squad.
Addressing the team’s uneven start to the season, Hargreaves acknowledged the club’s high-profile summer signings, yet noted the lack of momentum early on.
He believes the Europa League offers an important opportunity for United to regroup and focus on success, even though their ultimate goal remains to compete in the Champions League.
At this stage, however, playing in the Europa League could provide the team with the confidence boost they need.
One player expected to make his Europa League debut is young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who will likely feature against Twente. Hargreaves is particularly excited about the addition of Manuel Ugarte to United’s midfield, which he believes will help Mainoo develop further.
He praised Mainoo’s calmness on the ball but also stressed the need for balance in the midfield, especially in terms of recovering possession—a key issue from last season that remains a concern this year despite the new signings.
Hargreaves expressed confidence in Ugarte’s ability to strengthen United’s midfield, describing him as a dynamic player with strong pressing skills.
He also emphasized the importance of collective defending, starting from the front line. Overall, Hargreaves remains hopeful that with a few tactical adjustments and a stronger sense of teamwork, Manchester United can make a serious run for the Europa League title this season.
