Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has informed Antony, the club’s £86 million winger, that he must demonstrate his value to secure a regular place in the team. Ten Hag understands Antony’s frustration, as the Brazilian has featured only once this season, making a late substitute appearance against Brighton.
Antony, who is 24 years old, is eager to start in the Carabao Cup match against Barnsley at Old Trafford tonight (Tuesday). Ten Hag stated, “We train every day, and players need to earn their positions. This is top-level professional football, and everyone must compete for their spot. We select the starting eleven based on who displays the best form and teamwork.”
He added, “It’s natural for him to be impatient; he wants to play and is working hard for his opportunity. We expect every player to fight for their place in the Manchester United squad.”
Since his transfer from Ajax in 2022, Antony has struggled at Old Trafford and is now the club’s second most expensive acquisition. This season, Ten Hag has opted for academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo over Antony on the right wing.
Ten Hag remarked, “The other players are performing exceptionally well, and Antony needs to outshine them. Amad and Garnacho have been very effective. Antony needs to elevate his game to compete with them.”
Regarding the club’s pursuit of major trophies under the new co-owners, Ineos, Ten Hag stressed the significance of domestic cups. He said, “I don’t view these competitions as insignificant. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup are important, and all teams, including us, aim to win them. Securing trophies is essential, and we strive to win as many as possible.”
Antony has faced criticism for his performances, having scored just three goals and provided two assists in 38 appearances last season. Off the pitch, Antony has been dealing with allegations of domestic abuse from three women last year, although he was neither arrested nor charged in Brazil or the UK, and he has denied the accusations. A recent Brazilian police investigation concluded without charges, but the case may still be reviewed by prosecutors.
Antony’s legal team confirmed, “The São Paulo Civil Police investigation has been closed without charges. We were always confident that the confidential investigation would clear Antony’s name.”
During the international break, Antony and his girlfriend, Rosilene Silva, announced their engagement on Instagram, sharing photos of the proposal and their celebratory moments.
