Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to re-sign 21-year-old Spanish defender Álvaro Fernández from Benfica, with a buy-back clause in his contract giving them a significant advantage over rival clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Fernández, who began his football career in the academy of Real Madrid, joined United back in 2020. However, he struggled to break into the first team and was eventually sold to Benfica last summer following a loan spell with the Portuguese giants.
Since moving to Benfica, Fernández has enjoyed a breakthrough season, making nine appearances across various competitions, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League. His impressive displays have caught the attention of several top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona, both of whom are keen to bring him back to Spain.
However, United’s buy-back clause puts them in a favorable position, offering them the first opportunity to re-sign the talented left-back should they choose to activate it.
This potential move has gained further significance due to Manchester United’s current defensive problems. Both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, United’s primary left-backs, are sidelined with long-term injuries, leaving a noticeable gap in that position.

Chilwell, while proven at the Premier League level, would likely come at a higher price. Meanwhile, Fernández’s growth and recent form make him a player United could potentially sign at a more reasonable cost, while also benefiting from his familiarity with the club and the Premier League.
