BREAKING NEWS: Man Utd have reportedly started discussions with an unexpected second managerial candidate to replace Erik ten Hag, even though an ‘agreement’ is thought to be in place with Ruben Amorim

Manchester United is reportedly in discussions with Marco Silva about potentially stepping into the manager’s role, following the club’s recent decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag. Despite United’s ongoing pursuit of Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP, the recent loss to West Ham at the London Stadium marked a turning point, ultimately leading to Ten Hag’s dismissal. The decision came swiftly, with the club confirming the departure just a day later.

In an official statement, Manchester United expressed gratitude for Ten Hag’s contributions during his time at the club. “Erik ten Hag has left his position as Manchester United’s first-team manager. Appointed in April 2022, he led the club to two domestic trophies, including the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We thank him for his efforts and wish him success moving forward.”

The club announced that Ruud van Nistelrooy will temporarily step in as the interim head coach, supported by the current coaching staff, while a thorough search for Ten Hag’s permanent successor takes place.

Shortly after the announcement, journalist David Ornstein reported that United had started talks with Sporting CP regarding Amorim’s release clause, reportedly set at €10 million. Amorim, a young, promising coach at 39 years old, is believed to be interested in the opportunity. However, recent information hints that United may now have another strong contender in Marco Silva.

Adding more insight into the situation, Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague shared updates on social media. According to Balague, United has also contacted Marco Silva, currently Fulham’s manager, as there is speculation that Amorim might be open to waiting for a potential vacancy at Manchester City if Pep Guardiola were to depart.

Balague wrote, “Word from Portugal suggests Ruben Amorim may consider waiting for Manchester City if Pep departs. Still, United is actively pursuing him, and Marco Silva has been contacted as well.”

Silva’s name emerging as an option has intrigued United’s fans. After a turbulent spell at Everton, Silva rebuilt his reputation in the Premier League with Fulham, guiding them to mid-table finishes in 10th and 13th places over the last two seasons. He has successfully led the team to stability, keeping them well above the relegation zone and enhancing his standing as a tactician.

Balague noted that while Silva is indeed in United’s sights, there remains a strong belief in Portugal that Amorim is still a leading candidate for the role at Old Trafford.

As the search for United’s new manager unfolds, the club appears keen to secure a dynamic leader who can meet the challenges of a high-stakes Premier League environment and guide United to new successes.
