Manchester United is reportedly ramping up efforts to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres as part of their plans to overhaul the squad after a disappointing season. With the recent appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach, the club appears determined to utilize Amorim’s connection with the Swedish forward to bring him to Old Trafford. Gyökeres has been a revelation since joining Sporting CP, boasting an incredible record of 67 goals in 69 appearances. Last season, he scored 43 goals and provided 15 assists in 50 games, and this season, he has already registered 24 goals and four assists in just 20 matches.
Known for his physical presence, clinical finishing, and ability to link up play, Gyökeres fits the profile of a striker who could significantly bolster Manchester United’s struggling attack.
Currently, United’s frontline lacks consistent goal-scoring output. Rasmus Højlund, while highly promising, is still developing and requires more time to reach his potential at the top level. Financially, the move seems feasible. Gyökeres’ release clause is reportedly £84 million, but there is speculation that a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting could lower his price to around £63 million. This reduced fee aligns with United’s strategy to strengthen their squad without overspending.
