Manchester United has been encouraged to consider re-signing Paul Pogba, now a free agent, while also prioritizing the acquisition of a reliable striker. Former United forward Louis Saha believes Pogba’s return could have a transformative impact under new manager Ruben Amorim but warned against the idea of bringing back other former players.
Pogba, currently serving an 18-month doping ban, will be eligible to play again in March. Despite his challenges, Saha praised the midfielder’s exceptional talent and potential to significantly bolster United’s midfield.
He acknowledged that Pogba’s physical condition may take time to recover but stressed that his natural abilities and determination to prove himself could help him thrive. Saha argued that Pogba belongs at a top club like Manchester United, where his creativity and vision could add a new dimension to the team.
Amorim, recently appointed as United’s manager, faces the daunting task of rebuilding a squad that has underperformed, despite substantial financial investment. During Erik ten Hag’s tenure, the club spent a staggering £616 million, yet failed to achieve consistent success.
Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 tactical system demands high-quality players in key roles, and Saha believes Pogba’s return could complement this approach. However, he emphasized that addressing United’s glaring need for a prolific striker should be the club’s top priority.
Saha highlighted United’s ongoing struggles in the attacking department, noting that the lack of a clinical forward has been a major obstacle. While Marcus Rashford has demonstrated moments of brilliance, Saha pointed out that Rashford lacks the instinct and consistency required to excel as a No.9.
He suggested United pursue a proven goal-scorer capable of creating chances and delivering under pressure. Saha identified Viktor Gyökeres as a potential option, praising his finishing ability but cautioning that his valuation could complicate negotiations.
In addition to Pogba, United is reportedly considering re-signing Angel Gomes, who left the club for Lille five years ago. Gomes, now 24, has developed into a versatile midfielder and a regular for England. He will be a free agent next summer, allowing United to negotiate a pre-contract in January. Amorim is said to be in favor of the move, but Saha expressed doubts about Gomes’ ability to address United’s midfield challenges, advocating for a more experienced and impactful signing.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku has been linked with United, though Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has dismissed speculation of a January transfer. On the striker front, Gyökeres remains a top target, but questions linger about his ability to succeed in the Premier League.
Gomes has shown promise since leaving United, making 118 appearances for Lille and proving his adaptability in various midfield roles. As January approaches, Amorim faces crucial decisions on whether to pursue Pogba, Gomes, or Gyökeres—or explore alternative options—to strengthen the squad and steer United back to its former glory.
