Under the current leadership of Enzo Maresca, several academy products remain integral to the squad, though their paths have varied.
One notable academy graduate is Reece James, the talented right-back whose career has been hampered by recurring injuries.
In the ongoing 2024/25 Premier League season, James has managed just 241 minutes across four appearances before another hamstring injury sidelined him yet again.
Despite his immense potential, his repeated injury setbacks have limited his ability to contribute consistently.
On the other hand, Levi Colwill has emerged as a vital part of Chelsea’s defensive setup.
The centre-back has started in 14 of Chelsea’s 15 matches this season, helping the team achieve three clean sheets.
Colwill’s performances have been impressive, solidifying his place in the squad and earning him regular call-ups to the England national team.

Significant Academy Departures

Conor Gallagher, one of Chelsea’s most prominent academy products, played a crucial role under former manager Mauricio Pochettino during the previous season.
The central midfielder was a mainstay in the team, appearing in all but one Premier League match, more than any other player.
However, Gallagher did not fit into Maresca’s vision following his appointment in the summer, leading to the 24-year-old’s departure.
Gallagher joined Atlético Madrid in a deal worth £34 million, which also involved João Félix moving to Chelsea.
This transfer made Gallagher one of the most lucrative departures among players developed at Chelsea’s Cobham academy.
Another academy graduate, Ian Maatsen, also left Stamford Bridge after Maresca took charge.
The Dutch left-back, who made just 15 senior appearances for Chelsea, secured a move to Aston Villa for £37.5 million.
This came after a successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, where Maatsen played a key role in the team’s journey to the Champions League final.
In addition to Gallagher and Maatsen, another academy product departed Chelsea for a significant fee, although his post-departure career did not live up to expectations.
