BREAKING NEWS: Enzo Maresca makes revelation regarding Chelsea’s interest in the Crystal Palace star, who is valued at £70 million

Chelsea is considering a move to bring Marc Guehi back from Crystal Palace as they look to strengthen their injury-depleted defense.

However, the deal comes with significant hurdles, as Palace has reportedly placed a hefty £70 million price tag on the talented center-back, a figure Chelsea is hesitant to meet at this point.

    Chelsea’s Defensive Crisis

The Blues are facing major defensive challenges, with key players like Wesley Fofana ruled out for the season and Benoît Badiashile also sidelined due to injury.

These setbacks have left Chelsea short on defensive options, making Guehi, an academy graduate, a prime target.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge for Crystal Palace in 2021 for £18 million, Guehi has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s standout defenders and is now a regular fixture in the England national team.

    Obstacles to Signing Guehi

Palace is under no pressure to sell Guehi, who has 18 months left on his current contract.

As a vital player in their squad, particularly with the team sitting 15th in the Premier League and only five points clear of the relegation zone, Palace values him highly.

They are unwilling to lower their £70 million asking price, despite the risk of his market value declining if he does not sign a contract extension.

Complicating matters further, Chelsea holds a 20% sell-on clause from Guehi’s initial transfer to Palace.

They also have a first-refusal option, which gives them the opportunity to match any bid made by another club.

While this could work in Chelsea’s favor, it adds layers of complexity to the negotiations.

    Interest from Other Clubs

Chelsea isn’t the only team interested in Guehi. Newcastle United tried to secure his signature last summer but failed to agree on a fee.

Liverpool is also reportedly monitoring the situation, viewing Guehi as a potential long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk if the Dutch defender were to leave.

    Trevoh Chalobah Recall Consideration

Another option Chelsea is exploring is recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Palace.

Chalobah has been an integral part of Palace’s squad this season, and the Eagles may resist any attempt by Chelsea to cut his loan short.

Chelsea’s Struggles and the Road Ahead

Chelsea’s recent form has been disappointing, with poor Premier League results, including draws against Everton and Fulham and a defeat to Ipswich.

A 1-1 stalemate against Palace further highlighted their struggles.

As they prepare for an FA Cup clash against League Two side Morecambe, it’s evident that defensive reinforcements are essential for the Blues to recover their form and compete effectively in the league.

For Chelsea, securing Guehi will hinge on their willingness to meet Palace’s valuation and navigate the intricacies of the deal while fending off competition from other top clubs.
