Manchester United legend Gary Neville has voiced his concerns about a potential player swap involving Alejandro Garnacho and Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, asserting that such a deal would largely favor Chelsea.
As the transfer deadline on February 3 approaches, Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, with Chelsea reportedly showing keen interest in the young winger.
Reports suggest that the Blues are preparing to make a formal bid for the Argentine talent.
On Saturday, Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg revealed that both Manchester United and Chelsea have been discussing a potential swap deal.
Under the proposed arrangement, Nkunku would head to Old Trafford, while Garnacho would move to Stamford Bridge.
While no definitive decisions have been made yet, talks between the two clubs are said to be ongoing.
In addition to these rumors, a report from The Peoples Person indicated that Manchester United are keeping a close watch on any updates regarding Nkunku’s situation at Chelsea.
The French forward has been on their radar as the club explores potential reinforcements for their squad.
However, Neville has firmly expressed his disapproval of the rumored swap.
Speaking during NBC Sport’s coverage, the former United defender and eight-time Premier League champion made it clear that such a move would not be in Manchester United’s best interests.
“I don’t see the benefit for United,” Neville stated.
“Nkunku has barely played since joining Chelsea due to injuries and hasn’t managed to find any consistent form.”
Although Neville acknowledged Garnacho’s potential, he stopped short of labeling the 19-year-old winger as a world-class player.
He emphasized that United should only consider selling Garnacho if they receive a substantial offer.
“Swapping him for Nkunku? If I were Manchester United, I wouldn’t go through with that deal,” Neville remarked.
“Nkunku’s injury issues and lack of rhythm since his arrival at Chelsea raise too many concerns.
On the other hand, Garnacho still has so much room to grow and could become a key player for United in the future.”
Nevertheless, Neville admitted that Chelsea’s interest in Garnacho is understandable, given the winger’s promising performances and potential.
Meanwhile, reports have also linked Napoli with a move for Garnacho. Despite their interest, Napoli’s sporting director has made it clear that they will not overpay for the Argentine, as Manchester United reportedly value him at £60 million.
For now, the uncertainty surrounding Garnacho’s future adds another layer of intrigue to the January transfer window, as fans eagerly await the outcome of these negotiations.
