Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a potential move for a Premier League goalkeeper who previously worked under current manager Enzo Maresca.
The Blues appear to be considering a summer reshuffle in the goalkeeping department, and Leicester City’s Mads Hermansen has emerged as a strong candidate, according to The Sun.
Maresca, who took over as Chelsea’s head coach, has already shown a preference for reuniting with familiar players.
Since his arrival, he’s brought in talents such as Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia from Manchester City’s academy setup, along with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, whom he coached during Leicester’s Championship-winning 2023/24 season.
Despite a turbulent start to his Chelsea reign, with the club facing challenges in their pursuit of Champions League qualification, Maresca has the board’s backing to implement his vision over at least two seasons.
Hermansen, who was one of Leicester’s standout performers last season, remains a key target for Chelsea.
Despite Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League, the Danish shot-stopper’s individual performances were consistently strong.
His agility, confidence in claiming crosses, and composure when building from the back have all stood out—attributes that align well with Maresca’s tactical style.
In fact, Maresca publicly praised Hermansen as “brilliant” after the 24-year-old saved a Cole Palmer penalty in Chelsea’s narrow 1–0 FA Cup victory over Leicester in March 2025.
Statistically, Hermansen has outshone some of Chelsea’s current goalkeepers. In 26 league appearances, he made just one error leading directly to a goal.
In comparison, Robert Sanchez—Chelsea’s current number one—was responsible for five such mistakes in just one more appearance.
This contrast further fuels Chelsea’s interest in upgrading the position.
The Blues’ current goalkeeping roster is already crowded, featuring Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Mike Penders.
However, doubts remain over whether any of them can truly be the long-term answer.
Sanchez and Jorgensen, in particular, have not consistently impressed, while Petrovic and Penders are still developing, and Kepa’s future appears uncertain.
Leicester’s financial difficulties following their relegation could play into Chelsea’s hands.
Hermansen may be available for a cut-price fee, with reports suggesting he could be signed for around £35 million.
With Chelsea keen to reshape their squad under Maresca, bringing in a reliable and familiar figure like Hermansen could be a strategic move to reinforce a crucial area of the pitch.
