Manchester United’s hopes of salvaging a disastrous season rested on winning the UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, it was Spurs who rose to the occasion under manager Ange Postecoglou, lifting the trophy and sending United spiraling further into disappointment.

With the defeat, Manchester United’s season has officially ended in failure — no trophies, no European competition next season, and a shocking 16th-place finish in the Premier League.

This marks one of the darkest periods in the club’s modern history — a far cry from the dominance they once enjoyed under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Now, new boss Ruben Amorim is facing an uphill task heading into the 2025/26 season.

The club is not only reeling from their poor performance but is also set to be severely limited in terms of financial muscle and the ability to attract top-tier players due to their lack of European football.

Manchester United’s struggles in attack have been a glaring issue all season, and their inability to consistently score goals was once again evident in the loss to Tottenham. As the summer transfer window approaches, addressing the forward line has become a top priority.

According to former chief scout Mick Brown, United will open discussions with Bournemouth and Brentford over the potential signings of Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo, two Premier League forwards known for their creativity and goal contributions.

Brown stated that talks are expected with both clubs and that once United understand each player’s availability and transfer fee, they will move forward with one of them.

Mbeumo, currently a key figure at Brentford following Ivan Toney’s departure, is valued around £65 million, while Semenyo, who played an important role for Bournemouth under Andoni Iraola, is expected to cost close to £60 million.

Both players are seen as valuable options who could bring renewed energy and quality to Manchester United’s attacking line. However, given the club’s weakened financial position and limited appeal without European football, they will likely have to choose one over the other.

Ultimately, the decision may come down to which player is more eager to join the rebuilding project at Old Trafford.

This upcoming summer could define Manchester United’s direction for years to come. With Ruben Amorim under pressure to deliver, and fan frustration mounting, every move in the transfer market must be deliberate and effective.

The road to recovery will be long and difficult, but it starts now — with tough decisions and a clear, ambitious strategy.
