Despite Maresca publicly stating that he is content with the goalkeepers currently at his disposal, Minto believes the club’s transfer activity paints a different picture.
Last season, Maresca guided Chelsea to an impressive fourth-place finish in the Premier League and helped secure the UEFA Conference League trophy.
Following that success, the manager reassured fans that he is confident in his current goalkeeping options.
However, reports of Chelsea’s strong interest in signing AC Milan’s star goalkeeper Mike Maignan during the recent transfer window have sparked speculation that the club is not as settled in that department as Maresca suggests.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Minto directly addressed the situation, expressing disbelief at the idea that Chelsea have completely dropped their pursuit of Maignan.
“They say they’ve stopped chasing Maignan, but I’d be surprised if that’s actually true,” Minto said. “Maresca claims he’s happy with his current keepers—but that just doesn’t add up.
If Milan had agreed to a lower price, Chelsea would’ve gone ahead and signed Maignan. That tells you there’s a lack of real faith in the current goalkeepers.”
At the moment, Chelsea’s goalkeeping duties are shared between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, with Sanchez largely favored by Maresca last season.
Yet, the club’s serious interest in bringing in Maignan suggests that the coaching staff may not be fully convinced about either option being good enough to serve as a long-term number one. The situation has been further complicated by news regarding Djordje Petrovic.
Despite being on the club’s books, Petrovic has reportedly been informed he will not be Chelsea’s first-choice keeper next season and is now available for transfer. This indicates a possible overhaul in that department.
Additionally, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has noted that Chelsea are being offered a number of goalkeepers from various clubs, implying that the Blues may still be exploring their options ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Looking further ahead, 19-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders is being groomed for a future role at Stamford Bridge.
The highly-rated youngster is currently training with the senior squad during the Club World Cup, but it’s believed he will need loan spells to develop the experience necessary to compete for the top spot in the future.
