BREAKING NEWS: John Obi Mikel Voices Concern Over Chelsea Star’s Dip in Form After Benfica Clash

Chelsea’s pre-season has hit a worrying note following a 3-1 loss to Brazilian club Flamengo—not just because of the result, but due to growing concerns about the form of one of their key players.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has spoken out critically about the current state of a player who was once a major influence for the Blues but now appears to be struggling to find his footing on the pitch.

In his post-match comments, Mikel didn’t initially name the player he was referring to but made some telling remarks. He stated, “He keeps disappearing. Last season, he was incredible and carried the team when it mattered most.

But I noticed toward the end of the season that his influence was fading. Now, he doesn’t seem to have any impact. It’s worrying.” According to sources close to the club, Mikel was referring to Cole Palmer—Chelsea’s breakout star of the 2024/25 campaign.

Palmer had an outstanding season previously, notching up double digits in both goals and assists, and playing a key role in Chelsea’s positive finish in the Premier League.

However, his performances during the current pre-season have raised eyebrows, particularly in the game against Flamengo, where he failed to assert himself or make any significant contributions.

The creativity and composure he was once known for have seemingly been neutralized by opposing teams, and against Flamengo’s aggressive midfield, Palmer appeared lost and ineffective.

Mikel further explained that Palmer’s dip may not be simply due to fatigue. “It’s not just that he looks tired,” he said, “he’s hesitant and unsure of himself. He’s not the same confident player we saw last year.”

The Nigerian legend went on to suggest that Palmer is being tightly marked and targeted by opponents, who have now adapted to his playing style, making it difficult for him to find the space and freedom he once enjoyed.

Another factor behind Palmer’s struggles could be the tactical demands placed on him by new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Under Maresca’s structured and rigid tactical setup, players are required to stick to their positions and follow a strict game plan. This could be stifling Palmer’s natural instincts, limiting his ability to be spontaneous and creative in the final third.

Despite his concerns, Mikel remains hopeful. He stressed that Palmer is still a player with enormous potential, and it is now up to Maresca to help him rediscover the form that made him such a key figure last season.

“If Maresca can bring the best out of him again, Chelsea will be much stronger. He’s that important to the team,” Mikel emphasized.

Meanwhile, fans are divided. Some agree with Mikel’s assessment, arguing that Palmer has been underwhelming lately and needs to step up. Others blame the system and believe he’s being overburdened without proper support.

One fan remarked on social media, “Palmer isn’t the problem. He’s expected to do everything—defend, press, create, score. That’s too much for one player.”

As the season approaches, all eyes will be on whether Chelsea and Maresca can reignite Palmer’s spark—and whether he can once again become the game-changing force the Blues need.
