Former Chelsea star Willian has spoken highly of Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian, comparing the 18-year-old’s style and maturity to that of Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal. The veteran winger believes Estevao possesses the quality and mindset needed to succeed at the highest level and help Chelsea achieve major success in the years to come.
Estevao, who has been regarded as one of Brazil’s brightest young talents, will officially become a Chelsea player this summer after turning 18. The Blues reached an agreement with Palmeiras last year, reportedly worth £49 million, to secure his signature ahead of intense competition from top European clubs.
Reflecting on Estevao’s potential, Willian was full of praise. He described the teenager as incredibly talented with a remarkable level of maturity for someone his age. Drawing a parallel with Barcelona’s breakout star Lamine Yamal, Willian noted that both players display a similar flair, confidence, and attacking instinct.
“He reminds me a lot of Yamal,” Willian said. “Estevao already has the flair and composure needed to thrive in Europe. If he adapts quickly to the pace and intensity of the Premier League, I truly believe he can score goals, win trophies, and make a lasting impact at Chelsea.”
Willian also offered a word of advice to the young winger, highlighting the major differences between Brazilian and English football. “The demands in England are far greater, both physically and mentally,” he said. “Estevao will have to push himself harder than ever.
But Chelsea is a great club with the right structure to support his growth. I trust his mindset and believe he has what it takes to succeed. Talent won’t be an issue—what matters most is how quickly he adjusts to the league and the environment.”
Following the announcement of his transfer, Estevao made headlines by celebrating a goal for Palmeiras using Cole Palmer’s signature celebration. The move caught Palmer’s attention, sparking a friendly exchange between the two on social media.
“After I signed for Chelsea, I scored the next day and copied Palmer’s celebration because it was going viral,” Estevao told The Guardian. “We chatted online—he called me a star, and I said the same to him. He told me we’re going to achieve great things together at Chelsea.”
Often dubbed “Messinho” in Brazil due to his left-footed style and creativity, Estevao addressed frequent comparisons to Lionel Messi. “Messi is my biggest role model,” he said. “While I admire Neymar and Ronaldo, it’s Messi’s skill and personality that inspire me most. Being left-footed helps, but it’s more about how he carries himself on and off the pitch.”
He added, “Some players rely on natural talent, while others succeed through hard work. Messi and Ronaldo represent those two paths—one gifted, one relentless. I try to follow both examples.
