Manchester United have emerged as the clear frontrunners in the race to sign Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo, despite reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Fabrizio Romano on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast.
The Cameroonian international has become one of the most sought-after talents this summer, with his future a prominent subject of transfer speculation—particularly following Thomas Frank’s appointment as Tottenham’s new head coach.
Frank, who previously managed Mbeumo at Brentford, is understandably keen on a reunion, and Spurs have already held internal discussions about potentially pursuing him.
Nevertheless, it is Manchester United who currently lead the chase, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the Red Devils are maintaining frequent and active communication with both Brentford and Mbeumo’s representatives.
Negotiations between the clubs are said to be progressing, though reaching a final agreement won’t be straightforward, given Brentford’s reputation as tough negotiators when it comes to their top players.
Mbeumo, for his part, is believed to have already expressed a clear preference for a move to Old Trafford. The player reportedly told Brentford that United is his ideal next step, giving United a strong advantage in discussions.
Romano indicated that United are engaged in near-daily talks, underlining their seriousness about completing the deal.
As with any high-profile transfer, however, United will be keen to finalize terms quickly to ward off growing interest from other top clubs, including Arsenal, Newcastle, and Liverpool—all of whom are monitoring the situation closely.
In terms of fit, Mbeumo would be a perfect addition to Ruben Amorim’s system.
Known for his versatility, the 24-year-old can play as a winger, second striker, or even as a central attacking midfielder.
In the 2024/25 season, he was exceptional for Brentford, contributing 20 goals and 9 assists in all competitions.
Such productivity makes him an ideal candidate for Amorim’s tactical setup, especially as the manager looks to rebuild United’s frontline following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and potentially Hugo Ekitike.
The financial aspect of the deal is also critical. Brentford have reportedly placed a £60 million valuation on Mbeumo, rejecting offers below that threshold.
United have already spent heavily this summer, with Cunha’s arrival costing £62.5 million, meaning further outgoings may be necessary to fund this move while staying within Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
