TBR Football has exclusively revealed that Jadon Sancho has now formally communicated his stance to Manchester United regarding his next steps, as the club works hard to move him on this summer.
Sancho, who was loaned out to Chelsea last season after a well-publicised fallout with Erik ten Hag during the 2023/24 campaign, had a purchase clause attached to that deal.
The agreement allows Chelsea to sign him permanently for £25 million. However, if Chelsea decide against taking up that option, they would owe United a £5 million penalty.
Earlier reporting from TBR suggested Chelsea are hesitant to activate the purchase clause unless Sancho agrees to take a substantial pay cut.
Now, according to TBR’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, there is a tense standoff between Sancho and United.
While United have made it clear that Sancho will not be part of their future plans under incoming manager Rúben Amorim—placing him in the same category as Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho—Sancho has responded by setting conditions for any departure.
He insists that for any move to go ahead, whether on a permanent basis or as another loan, United must agree to cover a portion of his current wages.
Sancho currently earns more than £300,000 per week, and this salary has become a major obstacle for any potential deal.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are reluctant to subsidize his wages, particularly given that they have already drastically reduced his transfer value to £25 million, far below the £73 million fee they paid Borussia Dortmund for him in 2021.
The club feels they are already taking a financial hit and are unwilling to add wage subsidies on top of that.
There is reported interest from several clubs in Sancho, but the salary remains a stumbling block. Borussia Dortmund would like to bring him back but cannot meet his wage demands.
Napoli have also shown interest but face the same limitations, while Aston Villa are reportedly keen but equally unable to match his current earnings.
From United’s perspective, the club believes the discounted transfer fee should be enough to entice potential suitors, without them needing to cover any of Sancho’s salary.
However, at present, no firm agreement has been reached.If the situation remains unresolved by the start of pre-season, Sancho is not expected to feature in Amorim’s first-team squad.
Meanwhile, United’s summer overhaul continues. The club has already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha and is chasing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
However, further transfers will likely depend on the sale of current players.
Among those expected to leave is Marcus Rashford, who is wanted by Aston Villa but is reportedly holding out for a move to Barcelona.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana may also depart, with Monaco monitoring him closely.
Garnacho, who has reportedly fallen out with Amorim, has been instructed to find a new club as well.
As the transfer window heats up, it is clear that outgoing deals—including the unresolved Sancho saga—will heavily influence United’s summer activity.
