Viktor Gyökeres Rebels Against Sporting CP Amid Manchester United & Arsenal Transfer Tug of War
Manchester United’s pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres has taken a dramatic turn as the striker is reportedly in open conflict with his club, Sporting CP, over a broken transfer promise.
The Swedish forward, who netted an astonishing 54 goals and 13 assists in just 52 matches last season, has emerged as one of the most coveted players in Europe during this summer’s transfer window.
Initially, Gyökeres and his representatives were hopeful of securing a smooth departure from Sporting.
However, tensions have escalated after the club’s president refused to honor what the player believes was a verbal agreement.
According to Gyökeres’ camp, Sporting had previously agreed to allow a transfer for around €70 million, but now insists on receiving the full €100 million release clause embedded in the player’s contract.
This refusal has left the 27-year-old striker feeling betrayed.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the player is now taking a strong stance—refusing to report for pre-season training and expressing a firm desire to never play for Sporting again.
This move has essentially put Sporting in a difficult position, as they now face pressure from both the player and top European clubs circling for his signature.
Among those clubs, Arsenal are currently the frontrunners. The Gunners can offer Champions League football, a factor that Gyökeres has reportedly prioritized in making his next move.
The striker has even informed close family members that he expects to join Mikel Arteta’s squad, according to reports.
Meanwhile, Manchester United remain interested, especially given that manager Rúben Amorim—who worked closely with Gyökeres at Sporting—is eager to reunite with him.
However, United’s absence from the Champions League, combined with Sporting’s firm stance on the transfer fee, could hinder the deal.
The Red Devils have therefore been keeping tabs on other striker targets, including Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, and Moise Kean, while Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku has recently emerged as a new name under consideration.
The situation continues to unfold rapidly, with Gyökeres now essentially on strike in an effort to force Sporting to reconsider their asking price.
While his bold actions have brought excitement to his suitors, the outcome remains uncertain.
Sporting are holding firm on their valuation, but with the player clearly unwilling to stay, a transfer may become inevitable.
