Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of sealing a major transfer move for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, with negotiations between the two clubs reaching an advanced stage.
According to recent reports from talkSPORT and CentreDevils, the Red Devils are now very close to finalizing a deal for the 25-year-old Cameroonian international, who had long expressed his desire to make the switch to Old Trafford.
Mbeumo has been a top target for United since the beginning of the summer transfer window.
While he also attracted strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, it was United who pushed forward with a more aggressive offer after Mbeumo made it clear that Manchester was his preferred destination.
Brentford initially rejected United’s proposal of £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons, holding firm on their valuation.
However, further negotiations led to a revised offer reportedly in excess of £60 million, which appears to have turned the tide in United’s favor.
Although Manchester United have not yet issued an official confirmation, sources indicate that Mbeumo is scheduled to undergo his medical next week.
If all goes according to plan, the player will become the second major signing for United this summer, following the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million. With Mbeumo’s expected arrival, the club’s total summer spending will reach approximately £122.5 million.
Mbeumo had an outstanding 2023/24 campaign with Brentford, scoring 20 Premier League goals and providing eight assists.
His performances established him as one of the most consistent and dangerous forwards in the English top flight.
Known for his versatility, Mbeumo is capable of operating on either wing or as a second striker — attributes that make him an ideal fit for United’s tactical blueprint under new head coach Rúben Amorim.
The Cameroonian is also expected to earn a significant weekly salary of around £200,000, a factor that reportedly deterred Newcastle from pursuing him further.
Newcastle have since redirected their focus to Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, a former Manchester United player. While Forest rejected their opening bid of £45 million, Newcastle may return with an improved offer.
This is potentially beneficial for United, who inserted a sell-on clause when they sold Elanga last summer — meaning they would financially benefit from any future transfer involving the Swedish international.
Reports also suggest Newcastle have explored other winger options such as Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, and Johan Bakayoko, as they continue their hunt for a right-sided attacker.
Contrary to some unverified claims online, Rúben Amorim remains Sporting CP’s manager and is not affiliated with Manchester United.
Therefore, rumors suggesting he has “confirmed a fourth United signing” are inaccurate and not supported by credible sources.
As things stand, Mbeumo’s transfer to Manchester United is edging closer, but no official confirmation has been made by the club, and no shirt number has been assigned yet.
