Manchester United SIGN 20-year-old striker from top European club for club-record £98M fee

Manchester United are closely monitoring the situation of Bayern Munich’s Portuguese midfielder João Palhinha as they explore a possible loan move this summer, sources from GIVEMESPORT have revealed.

The Red Devils have already made big moves in the transfer market after a disappointing 2024/25 campaign where they failed to win any trophies or qualify for Europe.

Having spent £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha from Wolves, head coach Ruben Amorim now faces budget constraints when looking to strengthen other areas — particularly midfield.

Originally, United had been targeting Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson. However, with Atalanta demanding more than £50–60 million for their star player, the deal is now seen as too expensive.

As a result, United’s recruitment team have turned their attention to a more affordable alternative in João Palhinha.

Although Palhinha only joined Bayern last summer from Fulham for around £48 million, he has struggled to secure a regular starting role under new manager Vincent Kompany.

United have long admired the Portuguese international, dating back to his time in the Premier League, and are now considering a loan deal to bring him to Old Trafford.

Talks between Palhinha and Bayern about his future are expected in the coming weeks.

Bayern initially preferred a permanent sale — with a price tag of about £30 million — but are now considering allowing him to leave on loan so that he can regain form and regular minutes. This scenario could suit all parties:

    Palhinha wants more game time

Bayern are open to a temporary deal

United can add proven midfield depth without overspending

If signed, Palhinha would provide competition for Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and potential new arrival Manuel Ugarte.

His Premier League experience, defensive abilities, and tactical fit under Amorim make him an appealing short-term solution.

However, one obstacle could be Palhinha’s wages — close to €200,000 per week — meaning Bayern may need to subsidize part of his salary to make the deal feasible.

For now, there is no agreement in place, but United will likely wait until mid-July for clarity before taking the next step.
