Manchester United appear to be in pole position to secure the signing of Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on the GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Romano revealed that although Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the Cameroonian winger—particularly due to their recent appointment of his former coach Thomas Frank—it is United who are currently leading the race.
Mbeumo’s future has become a key talking point this summer. His impressive performances at Brentford, combined with his Premier League experience and versatility in the final third, have made him a hot commodity.
Thomas Frank, now in charge at Spurs, is understandably eager to reunite with a player who was crucial to his system at Brentford.
Internal discussions have reportedly taken place at Tottenham regarding the possibility of signing Mbeumo, reflecting how highly he is valued by the club’s new leadership.
Despite this interest from Spurs, Manchester United are reportedly in daily contact with both Brentford and Mbeumo’s representatives.
Romano has stated that United are “in control” of the situation and that they are currently negotiating a deal directly with the west London club.
Importantly, Mbeumo himself is said to be enthusiastic about the prospect of joining the Red Devils and has made his preference known, signalling to Brentford that he would like to make the switch to Old Trafford.
United’s desire to complete the deal is part of manager Ruben Amorim’s broader effort to overhaul the club’s attack following a disappointing 2024/25 season.
The club has already secured Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million and is eager to add more proven Premier League talent. Mbeumo, who tallied 20 goals and 9 assists last season, fits that bill perfectly.
His ability to play across the front line—whether as a winger, central striker, or attacking midfielder—adds valuable flexibility to Amorim’s tactical plans.
Brentford are reportedly demanding a transfer fee in the region of £60 million. United have made an initial offer of £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons, which is currently under consideration. However, time may be of the essence.
Other clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle are said to be monitoring Mbeumo’s situation, meaning United may need to wrap up negotiations quickly to fend off competition.
Overall, while Tottenham’s interest remains serious, especially given Frank’s connection to the player, Manchester United’s proactive engagement and Mbeumo’s personal preference currently give them the upper hand.
If a deal is finalized, Mbeumo could play a pivotal role in Amorim’s attacking rebuild alongside Cunha and possibly a new center-forward, forming a rejuvenated frontline for the 2025/26 campaign.
