Manchester United Transfer Latest: Mbeumo Deal Hits a Wall as Pre-Season Nears
As the 2025/26 Premier League season draws closer, Manchester United have returned to Carrington to begin pre-season preparations.
Their opening fixture against Arsenal at Old Trafford is just over five weeks away, and new manager Rúben Amorim is working around the clock to reshape the squad.
However, after a promising start to the summer window, transfer momentum has stalled — particularly regarding the pursuit of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha Signs, but Activity Slows
Manchester United made a major statement early in the window with the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million.
The Brazilian forward was a top target for Amorim, and his arrival was intended to be the first of many as part of a major squad rebuild.
Despite this strong start, further progress has been slow, with other major deals — especially for Bryan Mbeumo — yet to be finalized.
Mbeumo Deal in Limbo
The pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo has become increasingly frustrating. United have already submitted two formal bids — the first around £55 million, and the second exceeding £60 million.
Despite these strong offers, Brentford remain firm in their valuation and have increased their asking price, leaving negotiations at a standstill.
Mbeumo is reportedly eager to join United, and personal terms are believed to be agreed, but the two clubs have yet to reach an acceptable fee.
This stalemate is particularly difficult for fans to digest, considering Mbeumo’s standout season in the Premier League where he netted 20 goals, outperforming every current United attacker.
Supporters had hoped to see him signed before the pre-season tour began, but time is running short.
Outgoings Are Blocking Progress
Another significant hurdle is United’s inability to sell players. So far, no major departures have been confirmed.
Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Mason Greenwood are all on the transfer list, but no deals have materialized.
Without player sales, United are struggling to stay within Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which limits their spending power.
Because of these financial restrictions, other potential deals — such as moves for Joao Neves, Matthijs de Ligt, and Joshua Zirkzee — are also on hold.
Amorim’s ambitious plans are now at risk of being delayed unless significant funds are raised through player exits.
Pre-Season Clock Ticking
United’s pre-season schedule is fast approaching. They are set to face Leeds in Stockholm before flying to the U.S. for the Premier League Summer Series, starting July 27 against West Ham.
Amorim has expressed his desire to complete most transfer business before these fixtures, ensuring new arrivals have time to adapt and integrate with the squad.
With the Mbeumo deal hanging in the balance and other targets paused, pressure is mounting on United’s hierarchy to act swiftly.
The fanbase is growing increasingly impatient, and unless things change quickly, United risk entering the new season underprepared.
