With the Premier League’s return just around the corner, Manchester United are ramping up their search for a new striker to reinforce the attack alongside Rasmus Højlund.
The current options up front—Højlund and the recently signed Joshua Zirkzee—have yet to consistently deliver the goal tally needed, prompting head coach Rúben Amorim to push for a reliable, proven addition before the new campaign kicks off.
The two names at the forefront of United’s shortlist are Benjamin Šeško of RB Leipzig and Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.
Benjamin Šeško – The Long-Term Project
Šeško has been on United’s radar for quite some time. The towering Slovenian forward has attracted attention for his blend of physical strength, finishing, and movement in the final third.
Even though he recently signed a contract extension with RB Leipzig, keeping him at the club until 2029, there is still a sense that a transfer is possible—provided the right offer comes in.
Reports suggest his price tag could fall between £63 million and £75 million, should any club meet Leipzig’s valuation.
For Amorim, Šeško represents the ideal profile of a modern No. 9—one who can hold up play, make intelligent runs, and slot seamlessly into the Portuguese manager’s high-intensity system.
With Arsenal edging closer to securing Viktor Gyökeres, Šeško may become Manchester United’s best available elite striker option in the window.
Ollie Watkins – The Premier League-Proven Alternative
On the other hand, Ollie Watkins offers a more immediate, reliable option.
The England international has been in red-hot form, playing a key role in Aston Villa’s qualification for the Champions League.
Last season, he netted 16 goals and assisted 8, underlining his ability to consistently perform at the top level.
With 75 Premier League goals in 184 appearances, Watkins has become Villa’s most prolific scorer in the modern era.
United are well aware of his strengths: his relentless work rate, intelligent movement, and Premier League experience make him an attractive proposition.
However, Villa are reportedly demanding £60 million, and concerns have been raised over Watkins’ age (29) and limited resale value.
While trade deals involving players like Marcus Rashford were explored, Villa rejected such approaches.

The choice between Šeško and Watkins boils down to long-term investment versus immediate impact.
Šeško, while younger and with a higher ceiling, may require a longer bedding-in period and a heftier transfer fee.
Watkins, by contrast, is ready-made for the Premier League but comes at a steep price with little room for future profit.
