Manchester United’s pre-season opener against Leeds United may have ended in a goalless stalemate, but it was the emergence of Diego León, not the much-anticipated debut of Matheus Cunha, that captured the attention of fans and analysts alike.
León, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder/winger, joined United this summer from Cerro Porteño in Paraguay. Initially signed as a long-term prospect, León was expected to be sent out on loan to gain experience.

León was substituted at halftime with the score still locked at 0-0, but his performance had already left a strong impression.

Importantly, he emphasized that León demonstrated strong tactical awareness and, with slight adjustments, could become a trustworthy long-term option for the first team.
León’s display was especially timely given the current uncertainty in United’s attacking ranks.
With Marcus Rashford reportedly close to a loan move to Barcelona, and other key players like Alejandro Garnacho and Antony expressing desires to leave, United’s forward options are thinning.
As a result, León’s breakthrough comes at a critical juncture for Amorim, who needs fresh attacking solutions to improve on last season’s disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish.
The youngster is now expected to be part of United’s upcoming USA pre-season tour, where he will likely receive more minutes to prove himself.
