Manchester United Advised to Pursue Towering Goalkeeper Seen as MAJOR Upgrade Over Onana

Transfer Talk: Rene Meulensteen Recommends Donnarumma as Onana’s Replacement at Manchester United

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has voiced strong support for the idea of bringing in Gianluigi Donnarumma as the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper.

In an exclusive interview with Man U News via Poker Strategy, Meulensteen, who worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson during United’s golden era, spoke highly of the Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper and believes he would be a significant upgrade on André Onana.

According to Meulensteen, Donnarumma would instantly add a commanding presence to United’s goal — one they have arguably lacked since the departure of David de Gea.

“Donnarumma is a massive figure in goal — he’s physically dominant, has a wealth of experience in both domestic and European competitions, and is a proven shot-stopper,” Meulensteen explained.

While acknowledging that Donnarumma might not match Onana’s skill with the ball at his feet, he questioned whether that style is even necessary under new manager Ruben Amorim.

He suggested that Donnarumma’s strengths align more closely with what United currently need.

“Is playing out from the back the priority right now? Or is it stability and security between the posts? With Donnarumma, you get reliability, experience, and presence.”

Meulensteen made it clear that if the Italian international were to arrive at Old Trafford, he would likely take over as the starting goalkeeper immediately — casting serious doubt on Onana’s long-term future at the club.

He even suggested that pairing Donnarumma with a more organized defensive line could elevate United’s backline to one of the strongest in the league.

What’s the Reality Behind a Potential Move?

Although Meulensteen’s comments have sparked debate among fans, there is no official confirmation that Manchester United are actively pursuing Donnarumma.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper is believed to be open to a move to the Premier League, but he is also reportedly in talks with PSG over a contract renewal. His current deal runs until the summer of 2026, not 2025 as some earlier reports suggested.

Negotiations between Donnarumma and PSG have reportedly hit a snag, with the club seeking to reduce his wages, while the player’s representatives are demanding improved terms.

Some insiders believe that the rumored interest from English clubs — including Chelsea and Manchester City — might be part of a strategic play by Donnarumma’s camp to gain leverage in negotiations.

At this stage, United have not made any formal contact with PSG or Donnarumma’s agents. Still, Meulensteen’s public endorsement has added weight to a growing discussion:

Should Manchester United find serious competition for Onana — or even replace him outright?

With the summer window still open and the club under a new sporting structure, more surprises could be in store.
