Carlos Baleba joined Brighton & Hove Albion in August 2023 but initially struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup during his first season.
However, under the guidance of new head coach Fabian Hürzeler, the midfielder has significantly improved and become an integral part of the team.
His performances this season have been impressive, as he has already made 27 appearances across all competitions, solidifying his place as a key player for Brighton.
Baleba’s outstanding form has not gone unnoticed, as several top Premier League clubs have expressed interest in signing him.
Among the teams reportedly monitoring the 21-year-old are Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City.
These clubs have been keeping a close eye on his development, recognizing his potential to thrive at a higher level.
Former Cameroon international Bernard Tchoutang recently discussed Baleba’s progress in an interview with Africa Foot.
He admitted that he initially believed the young midfielder would require at least two years to fully adapt to the demands of English football.
However, he has been pleasantly surprised by how quickly Baleba has settled in and developed into a key performer for Brighton.
According to reports, Brighton are aware of the growing interest in Baleba and have set a high asking price for his transfer.
The club is reluctant to part ways with one of their standout players, but the strong demand from elite clubs could lead to a significant offer being made.
Tchoutang believes Baleba is prepared to take the next step in his career and join a bigger club, but he also suggested that remaining at Brighton for another season would not necessarily be a bad decision.
He emphasized that the transfer fee and speculation surrounding his future would not affect Baleba’s mindset, as he has a strong support system and the mental toughness to handle such pressures.
The key question, according to Tchoutang, is whether the midfielder is truly ready to move to a top club this summer.
“The price tag won’t distract him. He has a strong mentality, is well-supported by his parents, and won’t be swayed by the financial aspects of the move.
The real issue is whether now is the right time for him to make the step up,” Tchoutang explained.
He went on to say that while staying at Brighton for another year wouldn’t hinder Baleba’s progress, he personally believes the midfielder is ready for a big move.
Tchoutang noted that if Baleba were playing in a different league, he might advise him to stay longer to gain more experience.
However, since this is already his second season in English football, and top clubs are showing serious interest, it is clear they believe in his ability.
Tchoutang also weighed in on which club would be the best fit for Baleba.
He strongly recommended Liverpool as the ideal destination, arguing that the team’s style of play under incoming manager Arne Slot would suit the midfielder perfectly.
“For me, Liverpool would be the perfect destination,” Tchoutang stated.
“It’s not just because they are one of the best teams in the Premier League this season or among the strongest in Europe.
Arne Slot’s philosophy, which emphasizes pressing and attacking football, would be an excellent fit for Baleba.
Liverpool also have a track record of trusting young players, which would help him develop even further.”
On the other hand, he expressed doubts about Chelsea as a suitable option.
He pointed out that the London club is currently having an average season and is not operating at the same level as Liverpool or Arsenal.
In his view, Baleba should aim to join one of the top teams in England, as he possesses the qualities required to succeed at the highest level.
“I think Chelsea are not at the same level as Liverpool or Arsenal right now,” Tchoutang added.
“Baleba has the talent and determination to play for one of the very best teams in England, and I believe he is ready for that challenge.”
