Manchester United’s tactical evolution under Rúben Amorim has faced several hurdles, most notably due to the squad’s current limitations in adapting to his favored 3-4-3 formation.

This system places a high demand on wing-backs to perform both attacking and defensive duties with intensity, intelligence, and stamina.

While the system has proven successful in Amorim’s previous roles, the left flank has emerged as a glaring vulnerability at United due to personnel issues.

Luke Shaw, once considered a reliable presence, is now struggling to meet the physical and tactical demands required in this role.

His ongoing fitness problems, combined with signs of physical decline, have raised serious concerns about his suitability as a wing-back.

Similarly, Tyrell Malacia, who recently returned from a prolonged injury spell, has yet to prove that he can adapt effectively to Amorim’s system or consistently deliver high-level performances.

This has created a clear imbalance, making the left flank a critical weak spot in United’s tactical setup.

In response to this issue, Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes, a 22-year-old Portuguese international highly regarded across Europe.

Mendes is valued at around £58 million, and his profile fits perfectly within the tactical requirements of Amorim’s system.

Known for his explosive speed, relentless energy, and defensive intelligence, Mendes offers a rare combination of athleticism and positional awareness.

Offensively, he has the ability to stretch opposing defenses, deliver accurate crosses, and create meaningful chances, which is vital in a 3-4-3 system that relies on wing-backs for width and penetration.

Defensively, Mendes’ ability to recover quickly and maintain shape in transition makes him a standout performer.

His game intelligence allows him to make effective decisions under pressure—qualities that United are currently lacking on the left.

Additionally, at just 22 years old, he offers significant long-term value and room for development, making him an ideal candidate for a rebuilding squad.

However, bringing Mendes to Old Trafford won’t be straightforward.

Convincing a young player to leave a Champions League-contending club like PSG for a side in transition will be challenging.

United would also need to fend off interest from other elite European clubs such as Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

Furthermore, considerations around Financial Fair Play must be carefully navigated, especially with other transfer targets like Joshua Zirkzee, João Neves, and Matthijs de Ligt also on the club’s radar.

Still, signing Mendes would do more than simply fix a positional issue—it would represent a statement of intent.

It would accelerate Amorim’s tactical implementation, demonstrate faith in his vision, and move the club away from short-term recruitment strategies towards a more structured and coherent rebuild.

Ultimately, acquiring Nuno Mendes could prove transformative for Manchester United, both tactically and symbolically.
