Manchester United complete their first summer signing

Manchester United’s interest in Brazilian midfielder Ederson dos Santos has resurfaced, and recent developments suggest a potential deal is now more viable — and financially favorable — than before.

The Atalanta star, who was previously valued at around £50 million, could now be available for significantly less, adding urgency and appeal to the ongoing speculation.

According to reports from La Gazzetta Dello Sport, Ederson is among a trio of players Atalanta are open to selling — but only at the right price.

The Serie A side may be willing to let him leave for around €40 million (approximately £33.7 million).

This updated valuation represents a notable drop from the initial figure, and with interest growing across the Premier League, Manchester United may need to act swiftly.

The Red Devils have previously been close to securing Ederson, but Atalanta held firm at the time, refusing to sanction the transfer.

However, the landscape has changed. Now, Manchester City and Newcastle United are also reportedly monitoring the player, and a strong wave of Premier League interest is anticipated in the coming transfer window.

This heightens the pressure on United to move decisively if they are serious about strengthening their midfield.

At 25 years old, Ederson offers an ideal mix of experience and long-term potential.

He’s been a standout performer in Serie A, helping Atalanta secure the Europa League title in the 2023–24 season while also playing a key role in their third-place league finish.

Known for his ability to operate in both defensive (No.6) and box-to-box (No.8) roles, his versatility could provide Erik ten Hag — or any future United manager — with much-needed tactical options.

What makes Ederson especially valuable is his work rate and physicality, traits essential for succeeding in the Premier League.

His style of play is rooted in high energy, pressing, and positional awareness, making him a potential game-changer in United’s midfield.

Given the club’s current issues in that area, his arrival could bring much-needed balance.

At Old Trafford, changes are expected. Veteran midfielder Casemiro, now in decline and nearing his 34th birthday, is likely to depart, with clubs from Saudi Arabia reportedly interested.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte, despite a big-money move last year, failed to impress in his first season in England and may be loaned or repositioned.

Though Kobbie Mainoo remains a bright spot, he needs a dynamic, experienced partner to fully thrive.

Considering the relatively low price tag of £33.7 million, Ederson could be the perfect fit for Manchester United’s midfield rebuild — combining quality, experience, and affordability.

If United don’t act fast, they risk losing him to a Premier League rival.
