Chelsea are actively pursuing Ajax’s highly-rated defender Jorrel Hato, as per a recent update from journalist Ben Jacobs. The Premier League side has reportedly held renewed discussions with Ajax over a potential transfer for the 19-year-old, although no official bid has been made at this stage.
The Blues have already made three additions to their squad this summer: Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens. However, the club’s recruitment plans are far from over. With manager Enzo Maresca looking to strengthen several key positions, Chelsea are still on the lookout for new signings, especially in defense.
One pressing concern is the lack of depth at left-back. Currently, Marc Cucurella is the only natural option in that role. Though players like Reece James and Malo Gusto stepped in during the previous season when required, relying solely on Cucurella across an entire campaign could prove problematic. The club appears to be focused on bringing in reinforcements to ensure tactical flexibility and adequate squad depth.
Jorrel Hato has emerged as a serious target for Chelsea. The Dutch youngster, who is capable of playing both as a left-back and a centre-back, perfectly suits Maresca’s tactical approach. Despite being just 19, Hato already boasts considerable experience, having made over 100 senior appearances for Ajax. He has also earned recognition at the international level, featuring for the senior Netherlands national team.
Ben Jacobs, providing an update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the Blues’ ongoing interest in Hato. “Chelsea still active on Jorrel Hato after opening fresh talks. No bid yet, but one to watch,” Jacobs posted, suggesting that the West London club is monitoring the situation closely.
Reports indicate that Ajax have placed a £60 million valuation on Hato, making him a significant investment for any club. Whether Chelsea are prepared to meet that figure remains to be seen, but their sustained interest points to him being a priority target in the weeks ahead.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also expected to see some departures. Defender Renato Veiga appears close to finalizing a move to Atletico Madrid. The Portuguese player, who spent part of last season on loan at Juventus, is reportedly eager to continue playing as a central defender.
Chelsea are believed to be demanding a transfer fee in the region of €40 million, a substantial increase from the €14 million they paid for him just a year ago.
As Chelsea continue to reshape their squad under Enzo Maresca, it is evident that further defensive adjustments are on the horizon—with Jorrel Hato at the top of their wishlist.
