Manchester United are reportedly considering loaning out Brazilian winger Antony in the upcoming January transfer window, with the possibility of making the move permanent next summer.
The 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 in a record-breaking deal worth up to £86 million. However, he has struggled to live up to the high expectations that accompanied his move. This season, Antony’s playing time has significantly diminished under manager Erik ten Hag, raising questions about his long-term future at the club.
Antony’s transfer was heavily influenced by Ten Hag, who had previously coached him at Ajax and advocated for his signing to enhance United’s attack. The deal included £82 million in guaranteed payments, making Antony one of the most expensive players in the club’s history. However, the transfer fee has been a source of contention, particularly since earlier scouting reports during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure valued Antony at just £25 million. At that time, United hesitated to pay more than £60 million for the winger.
Since joining the Red Devils, Antony has struggled to consistently deliver performances that justify the club’s significant investment. While he showed glimpses of his potential early on, his overall impact has been underwhelming. This season, Antony has faced increased competition from players like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo, all of whom have been preferred in wide attacking roles.
Even with the departures of other wide players such as Jadon Sancho, Omari Forson, and Facundo Pellistri, Antony’s opportunities have remained limited. To date, he has logged just 139 minutes across all competitions this season, with his only start coming in a Carabao Cup match against Barnsley.
The situation has fueled speculation about Antony’s future, with reports suggesting that a loan move in January could be on the cards. Such a move would allow him to secure regular playing time and potentially rediscover the form that made him a standout player at Ajax.
For Manchester United, this would provide an opportunity to evaluate whether Antony can still play a meaningful role in the squad or if a permanent transfer is the best course of action to recoup part of their substantial investment.
