Fabio Vieira is currently spending the season on loan at Porto, having temporarily left Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

Contrary to the notion that Vieira’s time at Arsenal is effectively over, recent updates suggest he still has a chance to establish himself in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has offered some clarity on the situation, emphasizing that Arsenal’s decision to send Vieira on loan does not reflect a lack of faith in him.
Instead, the club is keeping their options open regarding his long-term future, with a full review planned after his loan spell ends.
Romano explained on the Here We Go podcast that Arsenal deliberately structured Vieira’s loan deal to Porto without any purchase clauses—neither an option nor an obligation to buy.
This strategic move was made to retain full control over the player’s future.
According to Romano, the idea was not to sever ties with Vieira but rather to allow him an opportunity to develop further before making a final decision about his role within the Arsenal squad.
“After Fabio Vieira joined Porto on loan from Arsenal, many people started saying, ‘Okay, it’s over for Vieira at Arsenal,’” Romano stated. “What I’m told is that this is not the case.
Arsenal only wanted a straight loan with no buy option because they want to assess Vieira’s situation again in one year.”
Vieira’s time at Arsenal so far has been a mixed bag.
While he has showcased flashes of brilliance—such as setting up crucial goals for Gabriel Martinelli against Aston Villa and Gabriel Jesus against Manchester United—his overall contributions have been limited.Questions about his physicality and work rate have also been raised, with some comparing his style of play to that of former Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil.
However, a productive loan spell in his native Portugal could prove transformative for Vieira.
Playing regularly in a familiar environment may allow him to refine his skills and build the confidence needed to thrive at the highest level.
