Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has voiced his dissatisfaction with the club’s decision to sell Marc Guehi, a move that may come back to haunt them as they are reportedly interested in re-signing the defender during the January transfer window.
Guehi, a product of Chelsea’s academy, joined the club at just seven years old and signed his first professional contract in 2017. However, his opportunities with the senior team were limited, with only two appearances before he was loaned out to Swansea City. In 2021, Crystal Palace secured Guehi’s services for £18 million, and the center-back has since become a pivotal figure for the Eagles, surpassing 100 appearances for the club.
Guehi’s performances have been remarkable, earning him a call-up to the England national team in 2022. He played a vital role during England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, solidifying his reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
At 24, Guehi is now on the radar of top clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea, who are seeking defensive reinforcements following injuries to key players like Wesley Fofana and Benoît Badiashile.
Joe Cole, sharing his perspective with Paddy Power, believes Chelsea’s current defensive woes are a direct result of poor decision-making in the transfer market. “Central defense is a priority for Chelsea. Benoît Badiashile has been struggling with injuries, and while Wesley Fofana has been outstanding, he’s been plagued by setbacks. Levi Colwill is a bright prospect, but he’s still developing,” Cole remarked.
“It’s frustrating because they sold Marc Guehi, who has now grown into a top-class center-back. He’s a regular starter for England, and Chelsea may need to spend a significant amount to bring him back. These kinds of situations happen far too often at the club,” he added.
Cole also praised Guehi’s abilities, stating, “He’s as good as any center-half outside of Manchester City and Arsenal and is still improving. Bringing him back would make sense if Chelsea needs reinforcements, but it’s frustrating that they even allowed this to happen in the first place.”
Chelsea’s poor form has been evident, with their latest result a 1-1 draw against Guehi’s Crystal Palace, extending their winless streak to several matches since December 22. Critics, including Clinton Morrison, have pointed to Chelsea’s lack of attacking efficiency, with the team heavily reliant on young talents like Cole Palmer while struggling to convert chances.
The Blues will aim to turn their fortunes around when they face League Two side Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
