Roy Keane has blasted Manchester United, calling them “complete fools” if they let their £40 million star rejoin his old club for less than they paid, labeling it a “massive humiliation.”

Manchester United is facing a crucial decision regarding the future of Brazilian winger Antony, who has failed to live up to expectations since his £86 million transfer from Ajax in 2022. Despite flourishing under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, Antony has struggled to replicate his form at Old Trafford, contributing to only two goals in 29 Premier League matches last season.

With his playing time significantly reduced this season, clocking only 27 minutes in the Premier League, Antony is now linked with a potential departure. Manchester United is reportedly open to loaning him out in January, with a permanent move possible next summer for around £40 million.

However, a return to Ajax could be detrimental to Manchester United’s reputation, according to Dutch journalist Bart Sanders. “It would be humiliating to spend €100 million on a player only to loan him back to his previous club within two years,” Sanders stated. Instead, Sanders suggests clubs like FC Porto, Benfica, or Wolves could offer Antony new opportunities.

Antony’s time at Manchester United may not have been successful, but his impressive performance at Ajax, where he helped the team win all six Champions League group stage games, demonstrates his potential. Sanders believes Sporting Portugal still views him as a threat, ensuring interest from other clubs.

The situation raises questions about Manchester United’s transfer strategy and player development. Was Antony’s signing a costly mistake, or can he still fulfill his potential elsewhere? The club must weigh the financial implications of selling him at a loss against the benefits of freeing up resources for new signings.

Manchester United’s decision on Antony’s future will have significant consequences for both the player and the club. As the January transfer window approaches, the Red Devils must carefully consider their next move.
