Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has shared his thoughts on Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League showdown against Arsenal, predicting a decisive victory for the Gunners.
The match is set to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, with kick-off at 8:15 pm UK time.
Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, is bracing for one of his biggest tests since taking charge at Old Trafford in November.
The 39-year-old Portuguese tactician, who joined from Sporting CP following the departure of Erik ten Hag, has had a mixed start to his tenure.
His reign began with a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town after the international break, followed by a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
Most recently, United put in an impressive performance to secure a 4-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League.
Currently sitting ninth in the table and four points adrift of the top four, United are still finding their feet under Amorim.
In contrast, Arsenal have been in fine form under Mikel Arteta and are second in the league, trailing leaders Liverpool by nine points.
Despite United’s recent momentum, they will be without two key players, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, both of whom are suspended after picking up bookings in the win against Everton.
Interestingly, Merson believes Martinez’s absence could inadvertently work in Amorim’s favor.
In his Sportskeeda column, Merson highlighted Harry Maguire as a potential replacement in United’s back three, citing the England defender’s aerial strength as a crucial factor.
Arsenal have been particularly effective from set-pieces this season, and Merson suggested Maguire’s presence could help counter this threat.
“Arsenal’s proficiency at set-pieces isn’t by chance,” Merson wrote.
“With Lisandro Martinez suspended, Harry Maguire might come in, and his height and knack for defending aerial situations make him a key figure in such scenarios.”
However, Merson remains confident Arsenal will dominate the encounter.
Praising Arteta’s side for their cohesion and tactical discipline, he backed the Gunners to secure a convincing win, predicting a 3-0 scoreline.
“Arsenal are playing with tremendous confidence and a clear understanding of their system,” Merson said.
“On the other hand, United are still in transition under Amorim, and I don’t see them troubling Arsenal.
I’ve been generous with the scoreline, but I expect a comfortable victory for the home team.”
This clash will test Amorim’s tactical acumen against one of the league’s most in-form sides, and all eyes will be on the Emirates for what promises to be a fascinating battle.
